This installation visualizes the coexistence of warmth and coldness surrounding igusa and tatami in contemporary Japan through a space enclosed on all four sides with hand-dyed tatami made from domestically grown igusa rush.

As changing lifestyles have reduced the demand for tatami, while a shortage of successors and rising material costs continue to threaten the industry, traditional igusa craftsmanship is facing a rapid decline.

Against this backdrop, the work reconsiders endangered craft techniques not as objects of nostalgia, but as a form of creative preservation—an approach that sustains cultural heritage through contemporary creation rather than mere conservation. By asking how creative knowledge rooted in local climate, materials, and embodied experience can acquire new relevance today, the installation invites viewers to reflect on what we choose to carry forward into the future.

The thermographic color gradation is difficult to fully convey through photographs. Each strand of igusa — a natural plant material — is hand-dyed individually.
To delicately express a gradation of 20 colors, the composition is structured through approximately 200 finely divided grid units.
